Sound Quality Difference Between the Old and New Explorer with Various Headphones
Having received the new version, I set about to do some blind listening tests between the old and new. I started with the 22 Ohm impedance Sennheiser Momentum. Having a low impedance, these headphone should suffer from a poor damping factor and should lack punch with the old Explorer's 50 Ohm output impedance. I made a small mark on the bottom of the new version then put both Explorers in my pocket to mix them up. I then took them out of my pocket being careful not to reveal the bottoms as I placed them on the table. I hooked one up and listened, then hooked the other up to compare, and then guessed at which ones were the old and new. It was easy. I got 6 out of 6 guesses correct right off the bat. The old Explorer obviously lacked punch with the 22 Ohm Momentum.
Then I repeated this test using the Sennheiser HD 600---a 300 Ohm headphone that should not suffer nearly as much with the high output impedance of the old version. This time I got 4 out of 6 right on the first pass. It took that first series to know exactly what to listen for, and I got 6 out of 6 right on the subsequent series. In this case the bass slam was again the prime indicator, but I could also hear a lack of refinement in the treble region as a secondary indicator. Overall Sound Quality of Meridian Explorer
I'm pleased to report that I found the revised unit really terrific sounding. So often inexpensive USB DACs can be somewhat dry and uninspiring in sound quality. Not so the Meridian Explorer, which sounded organic and very clean. Bass slam was very good, the mids were liquid and natural, and the treble was airy, articulate, and not the least bit strident. This is a product I'll happily recommend in its revised form.
I have not tried the Explorer as a DAC as my concerns here was primarily with it's use as a headphone amp and the differences between old and new versions in that regard. If you'd like information regarding use as a DAC, please see Michael Lavorgna's review on Audiostream
